 Mug Club

Anyone have a mug club at their place?  I'm thinking about doing one and then running specials for the members on some of the slower days.  My problem is where to hang them.  My building is about 30 years old and it is a A-Frame structure with no real ceiling except the roof.  I got the crazy idea of looking at an overhead conveyor like they use at dry cleaners and hanging the mugs for that.  Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought of all this at around midnight after having a few beers.

Thoughts?

my only problem with that is the clean factor. Even at a place that hangs everything I ask for a glass to be washed before being served my favourite beverage.

why not use a model train instead? something with a lot of flat bed cars so that you can put the glasses upside down.

I could hang the mugs upside down.  Good point on the cleaning of the glasses.  I would think this is a problem in any place that hangs mugs.

 Sometimes there's legal issues

You may not believe it, but sometimes there's legal issues that prohibit such things because you're offering to sell your alcohol at a discount to some, but not all your customers.

The mug clubs I've seen in the past (before the legals issues were issues), all hung their mugs under the overhead cupboards at the bar.  Usually, those "members" who were fairly regular also had a place they sat which was fairly regular.  Their mugs would be hung over or near their stool.

I went looking for an old thread about mug clubs, but cannot find it.  I think it was in the original version of FS-com from back in the 90s/early 00s.  Sorry.

Ciao,

I am in Washington State and I do not believe there is any legality issues involved.  I have seen other bars have mug clubs and sell the beer at a discount.

Taken from my dear friend, Beth's book

From The Responsible Serving of Alcoholic Beverages, by Beth Dugan, Atlantic Publishing Group, 2006.

Washington State laws:

liq.wa.gov/dafault.asp

"No two-for-one drink specials or encourage any activity that promotes excessive drinking.  May offer a food and drink combo for a special price as long as no liquor is sold below cost of acquisition.  The law differentiates between "happy hour," "drink specials," and/or "promotions."  "Happy hour" is a specific time of day; drink specials can be by house policy but cannot be sold below cost of acquisition; promotions must be approved by the Advertising Coordinator at the LCB.  The board can take action against any licensee who promotes overconsumption or consumption by persons under 21."

From what I see there, you're good to go.

Give 'em what they want. Just make it better than they expected.

But double check -that book was researched in 2005- it might be a little out of date.....
