Funny things you notice when you visit other foodservice places

What are some funny things that you notice when you visit other food places?

The other day I saw a server sanitize tables with Orange force instead of Quat Sanitizer and I tried to explain to her that Orange force isn't foodgrade standard and cannot be used on surfaces that food is served.

I was at a fast food place and saw that the only person wearing a hairnet was the cashier. The cooks had hats on but no one else wore a hairnet.

Five things that have always bothered me.

1-  Walk up to a glass door and look through the glass at the back side of the inside door handle and it be covered wtih crud.

2-  Background music that is blasting.  Usually set on some rap or hip-hop station that the 17-year old assistant manager picked out because HE or SHE liked it.  Probably the owner/manager is at home passed out on the couch.

3-  To walk up to the front-door of a restaurant (or any business) and there are two or three employees standing there taking a smoke break.  Personally, I proudly discriminate...I don't hire smokers.

4-  Dining room lights that are burned out, or flickering and fixing to go out.   I guess the owner/manager never walks through the dining room.

5-  Toilet paper dispensers.  Why do they never work right??   Again, I guess the owner/manager never takes a crap.

I went to a local pub after a busy Friday, while sitting at the bar with my sous chef watched as the young, well endowed bartender rinsed her hands with the soda gun right over the ice. Classy.

Myself and friends went into a Chinese restaurant in a small town in California. There were no asians working there, only mexicans including the chef, and the music was country and western.  We enjoyed good food and had a great time, and now we have a saying amongst us.......only in Los Banos...........

Spilling some drink on the side of one of the plates and wiping it off with a dirty cloth.

Bear in mind that if they know that you are one of their competitors they may not give you the regular service that would give to other customers.  I knew one chef who realized that a competitor was frequently coming in to 'test out' their restaurant to see how his own restaurant measured up.  This chef would always make sure that the food he served this guy was of inferior quality and that his order got messed up.  So this guy left with a bit of a false sense of complacency, feeling that his own place was much better and he never got much of an idea about the usual standard that this place offered.
